The creative geniuses at Net Entertainment have done all the “setting the scene” work for us with this slot! Simply watch the stunning introductory movie clip that plays before the reels load up to find out what Gonzo’s Quest is all about. You have the option to the skip the movie intro, but you’d be missing out. We don’t want to give too much away, save to say that Gonzo is a Spanish conquistador who has come to Peru in the year 1541, on a ship of explorers seeking riches in the New World. Not content to wait for his shipmates, Gonzo strikes out alone in search of ancient Mayan treasures. He has stopped off on his quest, however, to help you take a share of the spoils by spinning a jackpot. You’ll see him cheering you on as you spin on the left hand side of the screen.
Symbols
Net Ent has created a truly unique set of symbols for Gonzo’s Quest. The symbols are all colorful stone tablets decorated with images (faces of humans and of animals) from the ancient Mayan culture. And, interestingly, these symbols do not spin – there are no reels, as such, in Gonzo’s Quest – they fall into place with a satisfying “crunch” noise in five columns and three rows on the screen. As the symbols drop down on each “spin” you’ll see the steps leading up to a Mayan temple in the background. The special symbols include the Free Fall symbol and the Wild symbol; more about those later.
Wagers and jackpots
Despite its very unique format, Gonzo’s Quest can be described as a five-reel, 20 payline slot. If you are playing for real money, you’ll be interested to know that the highest jackpot is 2,500 coins for five of the darker blue human face symbols; the lowest is three coins for three of the pale blue bird face symbols. You can bet coins from 0.01 to 0.50 in value in whichever currency you’re playing in. Net Ent also provides the option to choose a “Bet Level” between 1 and 5. This basically the same thing as the “line bet” option you’ll find in Playtech games. So here you can place up to 5 bets per line, on up to 20 lines, to make the maximum bet. Alternatively you can just hit the “Bet Max” button to make a spin. Admittedly, Gonzo’s Quest comes with a lot of ways to tweak your wager, which can be a little confusing. Check the display at the very bottom of the reels to find out exactly how much you’ve put down on your spin.
Other ways to win
Gonzo’s Quest comes with unique bonus rounds and special features too:
- Avalanche Multipliers – these can be triggered on a regular spin and also during the Free Fall Bonus round for higher amounts. Basically, every time you spin a winning payline, the symbols on that payline will explode in a cloud of dust and new symbols will drop down in their place. Any wins from the first avalanche spin are subject to a x1 multiplier, but after that things get more interesting. If you online casino nederlandsegokken make another winning combination on the first avalanche, your next one comes with a x2 multiplier. By the time you’ve won on four or more avalanches, your multiplier has increased to x4. All these increased winnings are added to your prize pot total.
- Free Fall Bonus round – triggered by three Free Fall symbols on an active payline, this bonus feature is similar to the Free Spins feature you’ll find in Playtech slots. In Gonzo’s Quest, you’ll receive 10 Free Falls, with the chance of winning more. The avalanche multipliers during the Free Fall bonus can go up as high as x15!
Music, audio and graphics
There’s not much music to talk about in this slot, apart from some atmospherics in the opening movie clip. Gonzo’s Quest is, however, a feast in terms of graphics for the online slot fan. Leafy tropical plants and ancient, engraved stones surround the reels, and Gonzo’s antics are good entertainment. He goes totally crazy during the Free Fall bonus round, punching the air, twirling his helmet on his finger and even, bizarrely, moon-walking across the screen.
The Last Word
Gonzo’s Quest represents the top end of online slot gaming. Net Ent can certainly hold its own against Playtech and Betsoft in terms of graphics and creating a believable back story for a game, however, the level of interactivity during this game’s main bonus round is a little disappointing. You don’t get to pick from any different options or control the slot’s main character in any way, and there’s no separate screen for the bonus round where the animations happen; it all just sort of happens to you on the main reels. For this reason we won’t give it a perfect score, but we still highly recommend Gonzo’s Quest. Nine out of ten.
